Defending charges in Newmarket
50 Eagle Street West is the courthouse for York Region, and it is the one we appear in most often after Toronto. Both the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice sit in the building, so a matter can start and finish there.
Our office in Vaughan is about 40 minutes away, which means we are in front of these judges and dealing with these Crowns regularly rather than occasionally. In a regional courthouse that is worth something practical: knowing how a particular Crown approaches resolution, and what a particular judge expects in a plan of release, shortens a great deal.
The work here is the ordinary spread of a busy regional court. Impaired driving and over 80 from Highway 404 and Davis Drive. Domestic matters, which move quickly and carry conditions that remove people from their homes on the first day. Drug charges arising from York Regional Police search warrants. Sexual offence allegations, which are among the hardest to defend and the most damaging to leave undefended.
If you have a first appearance listed at Newmarket, duty counsel are free at the courthouse and worth speaking to. Call us first if you can. What gets agreed at an early appearance is difficult to unwind later.

Where the case is actually heard
The building, and what sits in it.
Both the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court sit in this building, so a York Region matter can run from first appearance to jury trial without leaving it.
The courthouse is Newmarket Courthouse, at 50 Eagle Street West, Newmarket, Ontario L3Y 6B1. If you have a date there and no lawyer yet, duty counsel are at the building and cost nothing, whatever you earn. They can speak for you on a remand or a bail hearing. They cannot run your trial, which is the part worth thinking about early. Hours, virtual appearance details and the Crown office contacts are published by the court itself: the Ontario Court of Justice listing for this location.

Charged in Newmarket?
Tell us what happened and you will hear where you stand. It costs nothing and there is no obligation afterwards.
We are a private practice and our fees reflect the work involved. A serious matter is prepared over months, and we keep our numbers low so each file gets the hours it needs. We will tell you what your case is likely to cost on the first call, before you commit to anything. And if the honest answer is that duty counsel, Legal Aid or another firm would serve you better, we will tell you that instead.
