Defending charges in Milton

The Milton courthouse at 491 Steeles Avenue East serves Halton Region, which covers Milton, Oakville, Burlington and Halton Hills. Both levels of court sit in the same building, which means a matter that starts in the Ontario Court and moves to the Superior Court does not move address.

Halton Regional Police work a region that is affluent, fast-growing and cut through by the 401 and the 407. A large share of what comes out of it is driving-related: impaired operation, over 80, refusing a sample, and dangerous driving. Those prosecutions are unusually technical. The approved screening device, the timing of the demand, whether the officer had the grounds to make it, and the continuity of the samples are all points where a case can be won.

The other steady stream is domestic. Halton Crowns run a domestic screening process and conditions get imposed on day one, frequently removing somebody from their own house. Those conditions can be varied, and the sooner that is addressed the better.

Milton is roughly 50 minutes from our office, and it is one of the courthouses we cover ourselves rather than through an agent.

The courthouse

Where the case is actually heard

The building, and what sits in it.

Halton Region charges are heard here whether they were laid in Milton, Oakville, Burlington or Halton Hills.

The courthouse is Milton Courthouse, at 491 Steeles Avenue East, Milton, Ontario L9T 1Y7. If you have a date there and no lawyer yet, duty counsel are at the building and cost nothing, whatever you earn. They can speak for you on a remand or a bail hearing. They cannot run your trial, which is the part worth thinking about early. Hours, virtual appearance details and the Crown office contacts are published by the court itself: the Ontario Court of Justice listing for this location.

Can bail conditions keeping me out of my home be changed?

Often, yes. Conditions can be varied on consent or on application, and a condition that removes you from your own home is one of the more common things we move to change early.

We are a private practice and our fees reflect the work involved. A serious matter is prepared over months, and we keep our numbers low so each file gets the hours it needs. We will tell you what your case is likely to cost on the first call, before you commit to anything. And if the honest answer is that duty counsel, Legal Aid or another firm would serve you better, we will tell you that instead.
